Afterschool: Clay and Pottery Program
Duration: 12 Weeks. One 1.5 hour session each week.
Schedule: Offered on Mon and Wednesdays at 5pm
Pricing: $350 for 12 sessions.
Admission: We offer rolling admission to our Afterschool and Homeschool programs. Please select the first date of your 12-week program to confirm your spot. The 12 weeks will start from that day.
Weekly Details of the Program
Week 1: Introduction to Clay and Basic Hand-Building Techniques
Objective: Get familiar with clay and basic hand-building techniques.
Activities: Introduction to clay and essential tools; learn about basic hand-building techniques (pinching, coiling, and slab building); Practice creating simple shapes and forms.
Week 2: Hand-Built Animal Using Slab Technique
Objective: Create a favorite animal using the slab technique.
Activities: Introduction to the slab technique, Design and start creating an animal figure using the slab technique; Focus on building and assembling parts.
Week 3: Refining and Detailing Hand-Built Animals
Objective: Add details and textures to hand-built animals.
Activities: Continue working on slab animals; Adding details, textures, and refining the shapes; Start the drying process.
Week 4: Introduction to the Pottery Wheel
Objective: Learn the basics of the pottery wheel.
Activities: Introduction to the pottery wheel and safety measures; Demonstration of wheel throwing techniques; Hands-on practice with centering the clay and basic throwing techniques.
Week 5: Wheel Throwing Practice
Objective: Improve wheel throwing skills.
Activities: Continue practicing wheel throwing; Create simple forms like bowls or cups; Focus on mastering the basic techniques.
Week 6: Trimming on the Wheel
Objective: Learn trimming techniques for thrown pieces.
Activities: Introduction to trimming tools and techniques; Demonstration of trimming a thrown piece; Hands-on practice trimming bowls or cups made in previous sessions.
Week 7: Creating Pinch Technique Planters
Objective: Create planters using the pinch technique.
Activities: Introduction to the pinch technique; Demonstration and hands-on creation of a planter; Adding textures and patterns to planters.
Week 8: Advanced Wheel Throwing Techniques
Objective: Learn and practice advanced wheel throwing techniques.
Activities: Introduction to advanced throwing techniques (e.g., creating larger forms, adding lips, handles); Hands-on practice with advanced techniques; Focus on creating more complex pieces.
Week 9: Combining Hand-Building and Wheel Throwing
Objective: Combine hand-building and wheel throwing techniques.
Activities: Design a project that incorporates both techniques; Start building the project using both hand-building and wheel throwing.
Week 10: Glazing Preparation and Techniques
Objective: Learn glazing techniques and prepare pieces for glazing.
Activities: Introduction to different glazing techniques (dipping, brushing, pouring); Demonstration of glaze application; Prepare and apply the first layer of glaze to bisque-fired pieces.
Week 11: Glazing and Finishing Pieces
Objective: Complete glazing and prepare pieces for final firing.
Activities: Continue applying glazes to pieces; Experiment with different glazing effects; Final touches and preparation for firing.
Week 12: Final Finish
Objective: Touch Ups and Final Finish and display all created pieces.
I went with a friend group and had an absolute blast! Rakhi was an excellent teacher, helped us select our projects, and guided us through step by step. We had plenty of time and didn’t feel rushed. She even served us tea and snacks. Will definitely return. Great experience!
